Clean environment is now a human right
On 28 July, the UN General Assembly recognised the right to a clean, healthy and sustainable environment as a human right in its own right. The vote was preceded by a corresponding vote in the UN Human Rights Council at the end of 2021. However, the extent to which this vote changes anything will depend on how consistently states implement this human right. UN Secretary-General Guterres described the vote as a "historic step" in the fight against climate change, species extinction and environmental pollution. The proposal for this came last year from Costa Rica, Morocco, Maldives, Switzerland and Slovenia.
