INA-Lunchbreak on supply chain due diligence act part 16
In this INA Lunchbreak, we will present how findings from the country of production can be used to fulfill corporate due diligence obligations and explain this using the example of the member project of the Forum for Sustainable Palm Oil (FONAP) e.V.

For the past year, the FONAP has been cooperating with the Indonesian palm oil forum FORTASBI and the local NGOs CAPPA and Setara Jambi in the district of Tanjung Jabung Barat in Sumatra, Indonesia. The project focuses primarily on ecological aspects. In the buffer zone to Bukit Tiga Puluh National Park, the project promotes sustainable landscape management through social forestry. For example, smallholders plant indigenous trees on designated areas, which also have economic benefits. This will also create income opportunities for women's groups who grow seedlings and vegetables in three self-managed tree nurseries. The plants are partly planted in the designated forest area and partly sold at the nearby markets.
The Pengabuan River in the project area is also to be protected: Villages are creating protection zones and green buffer strips along the banks to reduce the number of oil palms that reach the riverbanks. The last component is training that introduces smallholders to approaches of regenerative agriculture. This includes, for example, the production and use of biological fertilisers.
Businesses in particular can benefit from the on-the-ground findings and use them to fulfil their corporate due diligence obligations.
We introduce you to the FONAP member project in Indonesia. Then, Nölken Hygiene Products, a medium-sized manufacturer of hygiene and cosmetic products, explains why they decided to get involved in the project and how they use the findings to prepare their risk analysis under the Supply Chain Sourcing Obligations Act.
